Artist Statement- Luminaries
There is something magical and all-encompassing about carving a luminary. The process is cathartic, and the shapes seem to arrange themselves organically throughout the vessel as my hands serve only as tools to allow me to become one with the material, catalyzing it to take form. The Raku firing process compliments the vessel perfectly, especially when considering the temperance of the copper compounds in the colorful glazes as they fade from their unique and brilliant hues to an intense black over time.
The moments that color our mortal lives are fleeting, and this is what makes them beautiful- much like the colors which enhance the forms in this collection. The physical forms of the luminaries will remain long after the color has faded from these raku’d vessels- almost demanding the color to be appreciated during its brief existence. Just as we borrow these physical bodies during our human experience, deviating from the collective consciousness to interact and play in color before fading back into the whole, by living a colorful yet temporary life we add vibrancy to the beautiful form that is existence itself.
Artist Statement- Creature Teapots
The creature teapots add a playful elegance to the concept of functionality, tastefully altering the familiar shape of a teapot to elicit feelings of sentience around what is known to be an inanimate household object. The creative expression of an object that most would imagine in a much more normal context suggests that life becomes richer when we step away from literal interpretation to view reality through a more colorful lens, and that it does not need to be taken too seriously to be lived beautifully.
